How to virtualize volumes on VSP

After you login to svp, go under the External Storages and click on the Add external volumes button
virt1

Click the Create External Path Group (this represents the external ports where the devices will be presented through)
virt2

Click Discover External Target Ports
virt3

Select the ports where you know you zoned the external storage (click the port first then click the Add button) then click ok.
virt4

the array will perform a scan on those ports
virt5

Make sure you follow the recommendations for the external array otherwise you won't see the correct s/n.

Click the add button and setup the priority of the paths. If you use more then 2 paths, try to create 1 path group per 2 paths and alternate the path in here based on odd/even design
eg:
Array1 connected via CL1-A, CL2-A,CL3-A,CL4-A.
CL1-A AND CL3-A are on a ODD fabric
CL2-A and CL4-A are on a EVEN fabric

You would create 2 path groups
in path group 1 :
- wwn zoned to CL1-A
- wwn zoned to CL2-A
in path group 2:
-wwn zoned to Cl4-A
-wwn zoned to Cl3-A

As you can see there is a logic behind this, don't just add all of them in one big path group.
virt7

After you click the ok button you will be taken back to the screen. It looks the same bu the External Path group id is now changed (before was 0). Click the next button.
virt8

Now, the array will discover what volumes are mapped from the other external array.
virt9

You may get an warning, ignore it, it's just telling you that the filter is off.
virt10

Turn off the filer, then you will identify your luns by Characteristic 1, this is the lun id from the other array. You can setup the Parity group (in this case we are setting up E1-1) then scroll down to see the rest of the options.
virt11_1

You can give your ldev an LDEV id if you chose so and also you can specify the CLPR, cache mode and inflow control. I recommend leaving cache mode and inflow control to disable, i hope i will get the time to explain what they do in details but enabling them might hurt you really bad.
virt11_2

Click the Add button and build your virtualization map. Check the lunid, characteristic, Parity group ID and TOP ldev ID.
check1
check2

Based on the info build the table.

LunId Characteristic Parity group Top Ldev ID
0001 0418 E1-53 00:05:00
0002 041B E1-54 00:05:01

Click finish and you are done. You can now map the luns (00:05:00 and 00:05:01) if you desire to any host.
